A Mixtape is a musical collection often used in the Hip Hop Scene. To make a Mixtape is to take an instrumental off a song from another producer that resonates with you then write your own lyrics, record and release it at no cost to your audience. The final album collection is known as a “Mixtape”. Our version of a MixTape project offers one 14-session program which aims to engage Youth in storytelling, reading, literacy discussions, music and music production. This series was created to foster a safe space using music as a technique for self reflection, discovery, affirmation and to educate students about music production alongside.

The MixTape Project presents opportunity for personal growth on an artistic, cultural and educational level for both the participants and the audience. Hip Hop is a genre grounded in a culture of expression that fosters the use of little to make great art. Students will be challenged to reflect on their own personal experiences as well as the experiences of others through peer-feedback and the analysis of other artist’s lyrics. They will also be challenged to write lyrics engaging in the creative process of creating both meaning and beauty in a piece of musical art. Finally, participants will learn to use new tools to develop and record their sound.

One 7-week long session for 2 hrs twice a week. Before project close out Students will either visit a local radio station where their tracks will be played on the radio, or Host their own event in person / livestream.
